The shortage of multiple strengths and presentations of oral cefalexin medicines that started in December 2022 no longer applies to capsules, and now only applies to syrups and suspensions.
Because of this, we replaced the Therapeutic Goods (Serious Scarcity and Substitutable Medicine) (Cefalexin) Instrument 2022, which expired on 31 July 2023, with the Therapeutic Goods (Serious Scarcity and Substitutable Medicine) (Cefalexin) Instrument 2023 (SSSI). This instrument continues to assist with timely access for patients using oral cefalexin syrups and suspensions.
