Substitution approved for gliclazide 30 mg tablet shortages

There are shortages of gliclazide modified release 30 mg tablets. The shortages will continue until the end of June 2024, but this may continue throughout the year. 

To help manage the shortage, we have made a Serious Scarcity Substitution Instrument (SSSI). This allows a pharmacist to give a patient 60 mg tablets instead of the prescribed 30 mg tablets. They can use the existing 30 mg prescription and do not have to check with the prescriber. The SSSI has a list of criteria that the pharmacist must follow to give the patient the 60 mg tablets.
