About pholcodine cough medicines cancelled by the TGA
After a TGA safety investigation 55 products containing pholcodine are being cancelled from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. The 44 products on pharmacy shelves are now part of a recall.
There is a link between these medicines and an increased risk of serious allergic reaction to some medicines used for general anaesthetic.
Pholcodine was used in a wide range of over the counter pharmacy medicines like syrups and lozenges, to treat a dry cough. It was also combined with other medicines in products to treat the symptoms of cold and flu. All products containing pholcodine are part of this recall.
