Medicinal cannabis Authorised Prescriber Scheme data
This interactive dashboard displays all Authorised Prescriber applications for medicinal cannabis products approved by us. The Authorised Prescriber pathways allow authorised medical practitioners to supply therapeutic goods (such as medicines, medical devices, or biologicals) that are not included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) to a class of patients with a particular medical condition without the need for individual patient approvals.
Special Access Scheme data is also available.
Click the interactive graph details below and apply filters using the green tick to update the graphs and data. All the graphs will update with focused data. Filters can be removed by clicking the ‘clear selections’ box. Selected data filters are applied to the ‘bulk export’ for download as an excel spreadsheet.
More information on the released data is located at: Medicinal cannabis: access pathways and usage data.

Authorised Prescriber applications
Any Australian registered medical practitioner can apply to us to become an AP. Medical practitioners must apply for AP approval for a specified unapproved medicinal cannabis product for a particular indications (usage) for a class of patients in their immediate care. Medical practitioners can apply for multiple AP approvals for different medicinal cannabis product types and indications (usages).
Category based approvals
Medicinal cannabis category-based approvals came into effect November 2021. Prior to this date, applications were tradename-based. As they cannot be assessed under the individual categories these approvals have been grouped under the heading 'Pre-Category Approval'.
Authorised Prescriber approval pathways
In November 2021 some medicinal cannabis products were included in our Authorised Prescriber established history of use lists. Prior to this, all medicinal cannabis approvals were through the Standard (HREC/Specialist college) pathway.

Six monthly report data - initiations of treatment under each AP approval
We are not able to provide accurate figures on the number of patients accessing medicinal cannabis under the AP Scheme.
AP approval holders must submit six-monthly reports of the number of patients treated under each of their AP approvals. APs can hold multiple AP approvals for different medicinal cannabis categories [PDF, 276 KB] and dosage forms. We publish the number of patients reported to have initiated treatment under each AP approval.
Patient numbers cannot be extrapolated from this information as patients prescribed more than one product by the same prescriber will be recorded as an entry for each AP approval. Patients who change prescribers would also be recorded as more than one entry. The true patient count is unknown. The 6 monthly reports contain no patient details to allow for removal of duplications, and we do not collect prescription data.
