Consumers and health professionals are advised that several vitamin and perinatal (including preconception) products are being recalled due to a lack of or excessive levels of potassium iodine.
What should I do?
Check the table of products set out below.
Only the batches included in the table are being recalled.
If you have any of the affected batch numbers, please stop using the product immediately.
Please return the affected stock to your place of purchase for a refund or credit or contact the sponsors (their contact details are in the table) for return and refund of the product.
If you have any concerns or questions about potassium iodine and use of affected products, please speak to your health professional. In particular those who are pregnant and/or have an underlying medical condition such as thyroid disease.
What are the risks?
Iodine toxicity (excessive iodine intake)
- In mild cases, excess iodine consumption can cause diarrhoea, burning sensation in the mouth, fever, nausea and vomiting.
- In severe cases, iodine poisoning may involve swelling of airways, cyanosis, weak pulse or coma.
Iodine deficiency (insufficient iodine intake)
- If you are taking the product on the advice of a healthcare professional, you may be at risk of receiving too little iodine and should consult your healthcare professional.
